Onrus, famous for its artist community, is a typical laid-back holiday town. Onrus accommodation is plentiful and is also bounded by unspoilt surrounds. It lies nestled between a sandy swimming beach popular for surfing, a great tidal pool, the mountain and the lagoon. The green belt behind the beach is relatively safe from any proposed development, making it a wonderful holiday destination.
This part of the Overberg region is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, which has been declared a World Heritage Site due to the diverse array of fynbos that grows here. Onrus is part of the Whale Route, and is very close to Hermanus ? the Whale Capital of the World. If it is Peace and tranquility, bird life, mountain and sea views, to be able to walk to the beach and be lulled to sleep by the sound of the sea, then Onrus River is the perfect holiday destination for you.
Visitors from near and far flock to Onrus town to enjoy its many charms while local residents and homeowners savour the privilege of living in this unique region. Onrus River is a small, tranquil village situated 8km from Hermanus. Here, 120km from Cape Town, in the heart of the Whale Route, surrounded by the splendor of the Cape Floral Kingdom, visitors can experience the restoration of their body, mind and soul as they stay at the multiple Onrus accommodation venues.
The Onrus River begins its journey in the Attaquas Valley, 16.5 kilometers from the sea, and flows through the Hemel en Aarde (Heaven & Earth) valley before ending into the small lagoon. While the mouth of the lagoon is often open to the sea, there is little if any penetration of seawater due to the high sand berm.
